When it is 68 degrees in Alexandria VA on February 8, and one has run along the Potomac, how can one be anything but happy?

In more difficult times this is also one of the dark places of the earth. Yet even then, one remembers that things change, that things are bound to get better. There is a law of compensation. Should I then, when it is 68 degrees on February 8, remember that it will be cold again soon? If I am happy today, am I being inconsistent, even irrational? And your so-called point is?

Anyone who finds himself in Pittsburgh, as I do tonight, should not lament, but should rejoice in his ability to perform a work of spiritual charity. What I did was to speak to friends in Hawaii and Florida to tell them what the temperature is here.

I performed a simlar work of charity, many years ago, when I noticed that a colleague had left his car lights on. It was 200 pm. He would not leave the office for 8 hours. At that point his battery would probably be dead. He lived many miles away, in the country. He was, in truth, not a well-loved person. So what should one do, to give the greatest happiness to the greatest number? What I did was to tell a half dozen of my colleagues, so that they might participate in the joy of not telling him about his car.

I did the right thing, don’t you think?
