A Work of Spiritual Charity

Anyone who finds himself in Pittsburgh, as I do tonight, should not lament, but should rejoice in his ability to perform a work of spiritual charity. What I did was to speak to friends in Hawaii and Florida to tell them what the temperature is here.

I performed a simlar work of charity, many years ago, when I noticed that a colleague had left his car lights on. It was 200 pm. He would not leave the office for 8 hours. At that point his battery would probably be dead. He lived many miles away, in the country. He was, in truth, not a well-loved person. So what should one do, to give the greatest happiness to the greatest number? What I did was to tell a half dozen of my colleagues, so that they might participate in the joy of not telling him about his car.

I did the right thing, don’t you think?
