Institute for the Psychological Sciences

A pleasant chat today with Fr Chares Sikorsky of the Institute for the Psychological Sciences in Arlington VA. What has always astounded me are the people to whom those who are troubled look for help. The Ethics Advisor at Esquire magazine, the law professor, the marriage counsellor (who is really a divorce counsellor). Wilde said that divorces are made in Heaven, which is what the professional therapists would think if they believed in Heaven. So it is splendid that a first rate academic institution like IPS prepares therapists to deal with human problems in accordance with Church teachings. I wish them well, especially since they are likely to incur the opprobrium of the world. That is their glory, of course.
People with an especially black sense of humour may read the advice columnists as biting satire. My favorite is Carolyn Hax of the Washington Post, a humorless 43 year old who offers advice for the 18-30 crowd that even a 12 year old would find jejeune. If you like Evelyn Waugh, you’d love Hax.
